Hydration Is Crucial For Weight Loss

Hydration is a very important part of a healthy lifestyle. Did you know that your body is made up of 60% water, the brain is composed of 70% water, and the lungs are nearly 90% water, according to the USGS Water Science School. This explains why our bodies tend to function better when we are well hydrated!

So how much water should you be drinking per day? Your goal should be at least 64oz of water per day, but when the weather is hot or you are doing strenuous activities, you will need to hydrate accordingly. A good goal to set for yourself is to drink half of your body weight in ounces of water per day. For example, if you weight 180lbs, you’ll want to drink 90 ounces of water per day for proper healthy hydration.

If you are not used to drinking that much water, start off slow and increase your goal slowly. For example, set goals throughout the day to achieve your water intake. Try to drink half of your daily water by 2pm, and then the other half spread out through the remainder of the day. For the first week, try to drink a minimum of 64oz of water per day. After the first week, increase the amount you consume by 8oz. Do this weekly until you are used to drinking more and more water as the days go by. Before you know it you will be noticing the health benefits of proper hydration.

Not only does water keep your body hydrated and functioning well, but it also contains zero calories! One thing to keep in mind though, is that coffee and tea will actually count against your water intake as they contain dehydrating properties. Soda will also not count towards your water intake because it contains other ingredients that will not offer any health benefits such as high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, and other unhealthy ingredients. If plain water doesn’t taste great to you, try adding in natural sweeteners like stevia, or add fruit to your water to achieve proper hydration.
